Understanding Monthly Active Users (MAU)

Edited

Part of your subscription plan for Next Identity will include billing based on the number of monthly active end users that you have in your applications. This is calculated each calendar month and resets at midnight UTC.

A Monthly Active User (MAU) is defined as a unique user ID that successfully authenticates at least once within a given month. This includes authentication through any supported method, such as:

  • Email/password and mobile/password

  • Social login providers

  • Passwordless methods (e.g., OTP, passkeys, magic links, biometrics)

  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Note: Multiple authentications by the same user within the same month count as a single MAU.

The following actions do not count towards MAU calculations:

  • Unsuccessful Login Attempts: Failed authentication attempts due to incorrect credentials.

  • Unsuccessful Password Resets: Failed password reset attempts, such as entering an incorrect reset code or failing to meet password criteria.

  • Token Refreshes: Refreshing an existing token without re-authentication.

  • Account Linking: Linking additional identities to an existing user account without a new authentication event.

Note: MAU is calculated monthly and resets at the end of each month at midnight UTC.

How to view Monthly Active Users

In the Next Identity Console, you will be able to see Monthly Active Users (MAU) only once you are on a paid subscription plan (free trial accounts will not track MAU).

To view your monthly active users:

  1. In the workspace drop down at the top of your console screen, click on your workspace name.

  2. The dropdown will show you what plan you are on, and will show a progress bar of how many MAU have been used this month.

Note: The chart of MAU count will be updated several times a day but may not immediately reflect the exact current count of active users.
